The Paris Region Institute has commissioned a new study from the students International Master in Urban Planning as part of the 2023/2024 European Cities course under the Paris School of Urban Planning (École d’Urbanisme de Paris - EUP).
In 2022/2023, the students on this course at the EUP carried out an initial investigation into the definition of the urban legacy of the Paris 2024 Games, in particular through the London (2012), Rio (2016) and Tokyo (2021) Summer Games, before looking more specifically at the potential of the green and blue legacy (green and aquatic spaces), that of mobility and finally that of public spaces. This work fed into and helped to contextualise the framing work for the evaluation, which was in its early stages at the time.
Following on from this initial work, the 2023/2024 workshop, in conjunction with the work carried out by the Paris Region Institute, contributed to the definition of the protocol put in place to assess the urban impact of the Paris 2024 Games. In this workshop, the students proposed a toolbox of evaluation methods, explained the different ways of implementing these methodologies, and accompanied them with an initial detailed report of observations in the areas studied. They defined a methodological framework adapted to the unique context of Paris, based on a structured approach to evaluating the multifaceted impacts of the Paris 2024 Games. The study also aims to contribute to a nuanced understanding of the opportunities, challenges and legacies associated with hosting mega-events in contemporary urban landscapes.
